Rights Groups Tie Pakistan to Militants’ Disappearances

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is expressing alarm over reports that thousands of political separatists and captured Taliban insurgents have disappeared into the hands of Pakistan’s police and security forces, and that some may have been tortured or killed.

The issue came up in a State Department report to Congress last month that urged Pakistan to address this and other human rights abuses. It threatens to become the latest source of friction in the often tense relationship between the wartime allies.

The concern is over a steady stream of accounts from human rights groups that Pakistan’s security services have rounded up thousands of people over the past decade, mainly in Baluchistan, a vast and restive province far from the fight with the Taliban, and are holding them incommunicado without charges. Some American officials think that the Pakistanis have used the pretext of war to imprison members of the Baluch nationalist opposition that has fought for generations to separate from Pakistan. Some of the so-called disappeared are guerrillas; others are civilians.

“Hundreds of cases are pending in the courts and remain unresolved,” said the Congressionally mandated report that the State Department sent to Capitol Hill on Nov. 23. A Congressional official provided a copy of the eight-page, unclassified document to The New York Times.

Separately, the report also described concerns that the Pakistani military had killed unarmed members of the Taliban, rather than put them on trial.

Two months ago, the United States took the unusual step of refusing to train or equip about a half-dozen Pakistani Army units that are believed to have killed unarmed prisoners and civilians during recent offensives against the Taliban. The most recent State Department report contains some of the administration’s most pointed language about accusations of such so-called extrajudicial killings. “The Pakistani government has made limited progress in advancing human rights and continues to face human rights challenges,” the State Department report concluded. “There continue to be gross violations of human rights by Pakistani security forces.”

The Obama administration has largely sought to confront Pakistan in private with evidence of human rights abuses by its intelligence and security forces, fearing that a public scolding could imperil the country’s cooperation in combating Al Qaeda, the Taliban and other extremist groups.

After the Sept. 11 attacks, the administration of President George W. Bush urged Pakistan to capture militants and Islamic extremists linked to the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Since then, human rights groups have said that Pakistan’s security forces used that campaign as a cover to round up hundreds, if not thousands, of political activists and guerrilla fighters in Baluchistan and hold them in secret detention.

Precise numbers of disappearances are difficult to pin down, human rights advocates say, partly because family members fear that reporting missing relatives could endanger the relatives or even themselves.

“It is very difficult to put numbers on disappearances as they are accompanied by intimidation of the next of kin of the disappeared,” said Ali Dayan Hasan, a senior researcher for Human Rights Watch in Lahore, Pakistan. “People are unable to speak publicly. But we can safely say that disappearances are the order of the day across Pakistan, particularly in relation with counterterrorism.”

In Islamabad on Wednesday, the interior minister, Rehman Malik, addressed the security issue in Baluchistan without mentioning the disappearances. “We are trying to ensure law and order in Baluchistan,” he told lawmakers in the National Assembly. “I will assure that we will do everything to improve the situation.” In August 2009, he acknowledged that 1,291 people were missing in the country. Husain Haqqani, Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington, said in an e-mail on Wednesday that “the courts and the government are investigating cases of disappearances with a view to establishing the whereabouts of the disappeared persons and the circumstances under which the alleged disappearances took place.”

Under pressure from Pakistan’s Supreme Court, which has held hearings on petitions filed by family members of missing Baluch men, as well as public rallies in supported of the disappeared, the government of President Asif Ali Zardari has been forced to respond to the outcry. A judicial commission established to investigate the disappearances is scheduled to present its report to the Supreme Court on Friday.

Pakistani intelligence officials say that human rights groups have exaggerated the number of people held incommunicado. The officials seemed to justify the extrajudicial detentions by citing the country’s weak judicial system and often poor police investigations that they say have led to dozens of terrorism suspects’ being acquitted by local courts.

American officials have dismissed these claims for years. “ ‘Disappeared’ Pakistanis — innocent and guilty alike — have fallen into a legal black hole,” the United States Embassy in Islamabad said in a cable, dated Feb. 8, 2007, that was obtained by WikiLeaks and made available to some news organizations, including The New York Times.

American officials are expanding programs to build up the judicial system in Pakistan. Officials also offer human-rights training to police officers and finance programs to reduce the backlogs of court cases that prevent family members of those who disappear from seeking relief through the Pakistani judicial system.

“This issue has been a persistent challenge for Pakistan,” said a senior American official who deals with South Asia and who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the delicacy of the matter. “We’re trying to help Pakistan build democratic institutions so they can be a more effective partner.”

But American officials concede that the programs may take years to produce enduring results. The State Department’s most recent report on human rights in Pakistan, issued in March, said that during 2009 “politically motivated disappearances continued, and police and security forces held prisoners incommunicado and refused to disclose their location.”

That report, citing a Pakistani human rights group, said that in August 2009, Pakistani Frontier Corps paramilitary troops arrested two members of the Baluchistan National Party in Khuzdar, Pakistan. Two days later, the men were turned over to the police. “Both men showed evidence of having been tortured,” the report said. “Authorities reportedly forced them to make false confessions before their release.”

Raid on Islamic Groups in Germany

BERLIN — The German Interior Ministry ordered simultaneous raids in three states on Tuesday against what it called Salafist networks suspected of seeking the imposition of an Islamic state. The action signaled growing concern over the radical messages of some Islamic groups.

The raids, in Bremen, Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, were not linked to a recent terrorism alert reportedly inspired by phone calls from a man who said he wanted to quit working with terrorists and who warned of a pending Mumbai-style attack, the Interior Ministry said.

The ministry statement said the raids were directed at two groups: Invitation to Paradise in the cities of Brunswick and Mönchengladbach, and the Islamic Culture Center of Bremen, on the North Sea coast. The two groups work closely together and share the same ideology. The authorities are seeking to outlaw both groups.

The raids appeared to represent a departure for the German authorities in their dealings with radical Muslim groups. They were conducted under the authority of postwar laws enacted with an eye to the Nazis to prevent the overthrow of the state or Constitution by extremist groups. Before, those statutes had been invoked primarily against right-wing nationalist and neo-Nazi groups, and German intelligence had focused primarily on individual Muslim extremists rather than groups.

The ministry’s statement emphasized this shift in approach. “For a well-fortified democracy, it is necessary and demanded, without waiting for the jihad to occur in the form of armed struggle, to take action against anti-constitutional organizations.”

The statement said the groups were suspected of opposing constitutional order by seeking to “overthrow it in favor of an Islamic theocracy.” There was no indication that any arrests were made.

“The group is very influential and is especially active in converting people,” a senior German security official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way. The best-known figure in the group is a German citizen, Pierre Vogel, a former boxer and convert to Islam. “They do have the aim to change Germany and make it Islamic, but there is no evidence that they were or are involved in any terrorism,” the official said.

The Interior Ministry statement, signed by the spokesman Stefan Paris, said one of the leaders of Invitation to Paradise had called for the imposition of Shariah law, the statement said, adding that the raids had been carried out under Germany’s laws of association. Shariah is the legal code of Islam based on the Koran.

However, the statement said it remained to be seen whether the raids would confirm suspicions about the groups’ intentions.

Dozens of private homes were searched Tuesday, as well as religious schools and a store belonging to Invitation to Paradise that sells face-covering veils for women and caftans for men, The Associated Press reported, quoting a security official. The police said they seized evidence during the raids, but would not comment further.

German intelligence authorities have said they regard Salafist institutions as a potential source of terrorism.

The term Salafist usually denotes an extreme form of Islamic fundamentalism. But Salafists are divided into several schools, including one that believes that Muslims should remain politically disengaged and take up arms only when called to duty in a Muslim-governed country; anything else represents rebellion against the government, which violates Islamic law.

At the same time, the Salafist movement also has its share of revolutionaries — the so-called Salafi jihadis — who contend that rebellion is permissible. Germany has become increasingly vigilant in recent months about potential threats amid deepening concerns that a small number of German citizens may be under the influence of terrorist groups determined to stage new attacks, either in Germany or elsewhere in Europe.

The recent terrorism alert was prompted by a caller who claimed to have been a jihadist working with terrorists in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region and provided what law enforcement officials called concrete information concerning a recent plot to rampage through the Reichstag, the seat of Germany’s Parliament and a popular tourist site. As a result of that alarm, the authorities deployed heavily armed police officers across the nation.

The Interior Ministry said that there was “no connection” with Germany’s current alert and that the raids had been “planned for a long time.”

The authorities’ actions recalled events last summer when officials in Hamburg closed a mosque where Mohamed Atta, one of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers, had prayed. It had become a destination for jihadi tourism.

Pakistan: Court’s Help is Urged in Blasphemy Death Sentence

The Pakistani government has asked the lawyers for a Christian woman who has been sentenced to death for blasphemy against Islam to seek exoneration from a High Court. The federal minister for minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti, said the woman, Asia Bibi, 45, should try to get her death sentence overturned by the Lahore High Court before the president considers a pardon. Ms. Bibi is the first woman in Pakistan to be sentenced to death for blasphemy. She is accused of denigrating the Prophet Muhammad after fellow agriculture workers protested that a Christian had been asked to bring them a container of drinking water.

Taliban Leader in Secret Talks Was an Impostor

KABUL, Afghanistan — For months, the secret talks unfolding between Taliban and Afghan leaders to end the war appeared to be showing promise, if only because of the appearance of a certain insurgent leader at one end of the table: Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour, one of the most senior commanders in the Taliban movement.

But now, it turns out, Mr. Mansour was apparently not Mr. Mansour at all. In an episode that could have been lifted from a spy novel, United States and Afghan officials now say the Afghan man was an impostor, and high-level discussions conducted with the assistance of NATO appear to have achieved little.

“It’s not him,” said a Western diplomat in Kabul intimately involved in the discussions. “And we gave him a lot of money.”

American officials confirmed Monday that they had given up hope that the Afghan was Mr. Mansour, or even a member of the Taliban leadership.

NATO and Afghan officials said they held three meetings with the man, who traveled from in Pakistan, where Taliban leaders have taken refuge.

The fake Taliban leader even met with President Hamid Karzai, having been flown to Kabul on a NATO aircraft and ushered into the presidential palace, officials said.

The episode underscores the uncertain and even bizarre nature of the atmosphere in which Afghan and American leaders search for ways to bring the nine-year-old American-led war to an end. The leaders of the Taliban are believed to be hiding in Pakistan, possibly with the assistance of the Pakistani government, which receives billions of dollars in American aid.

Many in the Taliban leadership, which is largely made up of barely literate clerics from the countryside, had not been seen in person by American, NATO or Afghan officials.

American officials say they were skeptical from the start about the identity of the man who claimed to be Mullah Mansour — who by some accounts is the second-ranking official in the Taliban, behind only the founder, Mullah Mohammed Omar. Serious doubts arose after the third meeting with Afghan officials, held in the southern city of Kandahar. A man who had known Mr. Mansour years ago told Afghan officials that the man at the table did not resemble him. “He said he didn’t recognize him,” said an Afghan leader, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The Western diplomat said the Afghan man was initially given a sizable sum of money to take part in the talks — and to help persuade him to return.

While the Afghan official said he still harbored hopes that the man would return for another round of talks, American and other Western officials said they had concluded that the man in question was not Mr. Mansour. Just how the Americans reached such a definitive conclusion — whether, for instance, they were able to positively establish his identity through fingerprints or some other means — is unknown.

As recently as last month, American and Afghan officials held high hopes for the talks. Senior American officials, including Gen. David H. Petraeus, said the talks indicated that Taliban leaders, whose rank-and-file fighters are under extraordinary pressure from the American-led offensive, were at least willing to discuss an end to the war.

The American officials said they and officials of other NATO governments were helping to facilitate the discussions, by providing air transport and securing roadways for Taliban leaders coming from Pakistan.

Last month, White House officials asked The New York Times to withhold Mr. Mansour’s name from an article about the peace talks, expressing concern that the talks would be jeopardized — and Mr. Mansour’s life put at risk — if his involvement were publicized. The Times agreed to withhold Mr. Mansour’s name, along with the names of two other Taliban leaders said to be involved in the discussions. The status of the other two Taliban leaders said to be involved is not clear.

Since the last round of discussions, which took place within the past few weeks, Afghan and American officials have been puzzling over who the man was. Some officials say the man may simply have been a freelance fraud, posing as a Taliban leader in order to enrich himself.

Others say the man may have been a Taliban agent. “The Taliban are cleverer than the Americans and our own intelligence service,” said a senior Afghan official who is familiar with the case. “They are playing games.”

Others suspect that the fake Taliban leader, whose identity is not known, may have been dispatched by the Pakistani intelligence service, known by its initials, the ISI. Elements within the ISI have long played a “double-game” in Afghanistan, reassuring United States officials that they are pursuing the Taliban while at the same time providing support for the insurgents.

Publicly, the Taliban leadership is sticking to the line that there are no talks at all. In a recent message to his followers, Mullah Omar denied that there were any talks unfolding at any level.

Today’s Europe and the world are being haunted by neo-old violent conflict – stupidity vs. common sense.
While some people consider stupidity an evolutionary gift that allowed us to survive at all odds – many still believe – it is not an option.
Despite all those smoke signals, mainly from the apostates of Islam, some folks stubbornly insist that this so called religion could be quite amicable if handle with care and left alone.
That is a mistake and stupidity n. 1.
Repeat after me: Islam is not a religion but a violent, political hostile ideology – similar to fascism and Communism and should be treated as such.
From all other internal and external indications, it is obvious that this human made cancer has no cure in face of cowardly attitude of some leaders and politicians.
Sure, one can argue – what about other religions? Within the span of, let’s say 50 years, I’ve not heard of any terrorist, fanatical effort to alter our life, based on neither Judaism nor Christianity, not to mention Buddhism.
Moreover, every day – either in the TV, radio or in the printed media we come across terrifying news of barbaric, terrorist crimes committed by the adherents of so called religion. Not only they intend to kill kefirs (non-believers) such as me but also they are also busy killing their own Moslems if they happened to be on the “wrong side” of this religion.
The PC camp keeps insisting that we all should adhere to civility and law regardless of actions.
This is a mistake and stupidity n. 2.
Any superficial student of history soon discovers its own limitation when it comes to “statistics.” It is insanely pathetic how some apologists go the length to defend Islam as if it was a frivolous matter. I would like to know how many of these people would like to exchange their position with countless victims of vicious Islam in action.
When I lived and suffered under the Communism, I often wondered how come while we were behind the rusting Iron Curtain with no perspective of any improvement – some apologists of the Red East (usually from the West), could easily travel, spent extended period in the Communist government provided hotels with additional perks – with no guilt feelings.
Speaking of guilt and lack of ethics – the essential pillars of any faith - which should stress admiration, and respect of life.
Where do we see this concept? In beheading, stoning, burning books, destroying monuments belonging to all humanity, killing, torturing, splashing the acid into victim’s face, family honor killings, violent, brutal, and damaging female circumcision?
You tell me.
While here and there we can hear mild response from Islam’s own circles, there is no firm, resolute condemnation of these crimes against humanity.
So I say, better mad than Islamized! Stop defending the criminals in face of the true aspects of this so called religion.
I am fed up with double standard when it comes to terror and crimes, usually committed by the adherents of Islam. It is time to name things as they truly are and not as they appear to be.
Otherwise, our resolve and justice would become a mockery of our own willingness to protect and defend our civilization.

In my early satirical writings after 9/11, named Jews For Jihad (see my blog), I’ve predicted almost to every detail the futility and idiocy to initiate classical war against the ancient tribal warfare, constantly switching sides in the hostile, mountainous environment.
Have you read the latest news? Karzai and NATO are considering talking to the Taliban.
Talking to the Taliban after a few thousands dead young boys from every corner of America? What were they and are fighting and dying for? For those clowns in Armani suits? What about sending all those schmucks who got us into this mess at the first place to the front to face a real enemy (besides the stinking Taliban running out of perfume)?
You can’t defeat stupidity by adding extra stupidity!

Nothing seems to make sense anymore in the sea of abundance of information where the good and the evil are becoming more and more overlapping and unrecognizable.
When the Rushdie affair/case popped-out in the 80’s, initiated by those ridiculous old ayatollahs farts – who did not even read the so called “controversial” book The Satanic Verses, I sported the button: I AM SALMAN RUSHDIE, issued by the non-profit Media Alliance in San Francisco. Believe me, there was nothing controversial about this book. It was simply unreadable, unless you were involved with the intimacy of complex life in the divided India where Islam and Hinduism live side by side in constant state of tensions, depending on political and nationalist tendencies.
Rushdie went underground; I went out open – to protest what I deemed as an attack on the freedom of speech. Even then, it has occurred to me that if we would cave in to those illusionary fanatics, they soon will be back asking for more.
Rushdie has become a symbol of how the enemies of our civilization are trying to test our resolve and principles.
At the end, their hot fatwa evaporated and Rushdie is free to show up his bearded face at various literary events again.
Another “soon-to-be-martyr” is the Dutch politician Geert Wilder – clean cut, elegantly dressed fed-up Dutch who has come to the conclusion that something must be done in Holland to stop that arrogant ascent of the Islamic medievalists who came to Holland to ruin the country.
The last straw for Wilder and many Dutch citizens were open murders of his friends, first a politician Pim Fortuyn in 2002, followed by a filmmaker Theo van Gogh in 2004 by Moslem fanatics on the streets of Amsterdam during the daylight. Until then Wilder like many Dutch people was traditionally tolerant of the influx of refugees from various countries, mainly Middle East and North Africa. But soon this attitude started to wear thin. Once on Dutch soil the hordes of illiterate emigrants instead of integration were rather seeking isolation, claiming that it is in accordance with their holy book and Shuria law.
Holland had been traditionally a beacon of hope in Europe historically galvanized and brutalized by countless religious conflicts.
Even our famous Czech-born pedagogue John Amos Comenius got his political asylum in benevolent Holland in the city of Rotterdam in the 16th Century.
Many Dutch were more courageous then the rest of Europe, facing the Nazi occupation of their land. True, they had their Quislings too; however, many risk their lives to save their endangered Jewish neighbors.
The Dutch had truly learned from their history and consequently developed higher social and cultural awareness in order to improve their lives as well as their “guests.”
Go figure, if one left their countries due to the religious persecution, we would assume that such a person/s would seek the way out of it and not to try to force their twisted belief system onto a tolerant society. This is what is occurring right now in Holland and other Western countries.
The hordes of uneducated, confused, frustrated, aggressive, intolerant people descended on relatively decent society that at first reacted with bewildered approach.
The whole situation is out of control and Wilder has correctly analyzed the real danger to the Dutch society, its culture, customs, integrity, and most of all its readiness to help the needy.
Wilder is now under 24-hour police protection. Misguided “guardians” of PC dictatorship are violating his citizen’s and political rights. This paradox is rather tragic-comic. Here is someone who dares to speak up against the grave danger facing Holland and Western Europe and his life is being threatened by those who freely roam the streets of European capitals ready to become active cells of future terrorist attacks.
Many Moslems and their supporters have repeatedly prevented Wilder from attending various events because the manipulators behind the scene are soiling their pants in fear of the outburst of expected violence.
The appeasement doesn’t work – see 1938 events. Either you pin-point the danger in its nascent form or you going to pay heavy price no one can afford.
It is time to stand up to the destroyers of our hard-fought, complex civilization.
We shouldn’t allow them to dictate us their way of life – just as we are not telling them how should they live back home. They should go back where they came from. There they would be able to practice their twisted Shuria law and other forms of religious voodoo.
Therefore, I decided to wear a T-shirt with Wilder’s face on it, saying: “I SUPPORT THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH!” that has been printed by Eurabia.cz.

There is so much happening recently that it could spin off your head (before loosing it (a la Daniel Pearl way). Let’s face it –if you want to talk honestly about Islam, either as a layman interested in the subject or a professional academician – you have to constantly look behind for a lurking potential idiot who wants to die with you for the glory and guts of his lord (usually elevated so high that no one is sure where he/she is…).

All kind of things are subscribed to this lord – not only he can do many so called miracles (usually when nobody is around) – but also we have to remember a lot of these references are generally result of careless and/or bad translation from the original source, whatever it might be.

A lot has been said and imagined about the concepts of virgins awaiting heroic assholes that not only blew themselves up to smithereens but have also taken with them the whole neighborhoods. Now, their lord must have some kind of twisted sense of humor for it is in direct contradiction what the texts of every holy book seem to suggest.

From the general study of history, we know that nothing could be created in vacuum – things, events, concepts are interrelated in sort of chaotic, natural way. Call whatever you want but that is the story of us – humans. No book-like life manual is able to give us so called right direction, a sort of spiritual GPS, unless we try the concept of right and wrong ourselves. It is quite simple and straightforward – live and let live – but here in its simplicity lays genuine paradox of our species. The more prophetic and promising these concepts are, the more they are violated and trespassed by bunch of freaks and fanatics trying to roam it down our throats (when a head is still attached to our bodies).

Give me that ol’religion? But exactly what have had these folks in mind? The promise of better life somewhere up there since their life on earth was miserable, courtesy of us – imperfect humans? What attracts so many people to this sort of magic promise? Sure, life is hard and sometimes senseless with death dancing around us since the day we are born. For those of us who can clearly understand the concept of preciousness of life, it is quite simple – no one has the right to shorten other person life span – whether it is a priest, politician, pervert, populist, etc….But our history is full of these bloody soups where a group of few sitting around it decides the fate of so many, generally with catastrophic consequences.

OK, the world of antiquity collapsed since it ran out of its initial drive and energy. It was slowly and surely devouring itself from the tail on. Judaism and Christianity were attempts to bring some sensible order to this chaotic and traumatic rollercoaster – except both related concepts have had severe preconditions of joining their rather austere and sometimes counterproductive ideas. To the pagan world – that actually called them the ‘atheists’ – it was rather hilarious calling a mortal son of god even though in the Greek legends there are many references to such creatures – Hercules, for example. The Jews were considered the most obstinate from all “atheists” – not only they were strictly an exclusive elite but they have also invented a series of restrictive aspects of life, spending half of their productive energy on deciding what is edible based on their laws of purity. This will make even Medusa switching to safer hairdo with less hissing.

Hellenization of Israel did not go well since the good times of Alexander the Great. For some strange reasons, the Jews stubbornly refused to accept visibly superior way of life. Even some of their rulers leaning towards Greek way of life (Herod) were careful not to upset these religious hardheads. When the Romans stepped in with their straightforward military attitudes, brutality and arrogance (how can anyone resist openly superior Roman civilization?), the Jews rebelled even more openly and eventually speed up the destruction of their centralized religion and independence, thus creating the first incentive of Jewish absurd humor worldwide.
But the worst of all human mistakes was the birth of Islam. Countless Arab tribes were constantly engaged in tribal warfare until the point of exhaustion. They had worshipped anything that moved and threatened. In the hot and cold vulnerable desert lifestyle all this made some sense. The nearest inspirations were Jews and Christians – who tend to look down on these wild and disorganized desert people. However this didn’t prevent a copycat Mohamed to realize that without centralized, organized, and controlled religion those tribes will quarrel forever, becoming an easy prey for any invader. So he embarked on truly spectacular quest for knowledge stealing right and left – from Judaism and Christianity and included many aspects of local tribal deity, including local female tri-goddesses al-Lat, al-Uzza, and Manat (probably influence of the Semitic Babylonian goddess Ishtar) that made monotheistic fanatical, puppet editors of Koran very surprised and upset so they call it the Satanic Verses. Yes, folks, the Devil is very convenient – you just employ him whenever you need it.

Obviously, Mohamed created his own, personal myth – that actually wasn’t that original – all eastern leaders “suffered” from comparison to their popular heroes’ gods. God is dead, long live god! In this case, an uneducated, unsuccessful and horny young dreamer had uncanny ability to induce visions (obviously stolen from all influences) of having direct contact with almighty (again when no one was around), with help of that wingy fellow archangel Gabriel (probably a version of mythical winged creatures guarding Assyrian royal residences).

When Mohamed wasn’t dreaming in his favorite cave, he was keenly observing the world around and meantime noticed, spotted many attractive underage females who were obviously oblivious to this strange fellow, claiming he is their prophet too in a polygamist sort of way. His rich girlfriend, conveniently widowed married this smart fellow and made him her camel chauffer. Mohie soon got worse – god was running out of script and probably out of patience. Monotheist but polygamist Mohie meantime gain some solid grounds and managed to convinced loyals around him to increase their falling budget by attacking nearby Mecca full of rich merchants – both Arab and Jewish – who obviously looked down on this young, noisy upstart. As far as they were concerned, he was a nuisance. This was their fatal mistake that has forever changed the world.

Instead of hunting him down and finish the whole affair at its conception (proof of the lack of unorthodox visionary approach of old farts), they were contemptuous and at ease – a camel driver and a threat?! Soon it was too late and too obvious. Meccans failed to solve this issue of a fanatic in their backyard and upon seeing and sensing an easy prey, all nearby tribes descended on the rich.

First thing Mohamed did was to besieged rich Jewish tribes such as Banu Qurayza around Mecca and after victorious battle massacred 600 of them! The rest had converted.
In this so called peaceful Koran, some Jews are sometimes referred as apes and swine – sura 5.63 (Ibn Warraq).
So this mass murderer and children abuser/molester (Aisha was only 9 years old when he “married” her), was now at the head of formidable force not to be taken lightly.

So what are we talking about here? Islam as a peaceful religion and philosophy? Where did you/they get it from?
The recent events all around the world making the primitive fanatics famous for 15 minutes have just proved otherwise. It is not about whether Islam is dangerous, it is more about the proven facts that it contains insane point of view. Those who dare to write critically or skeptically about it are threatened with Holocaust by brainwashed hordes who don’t even read Arabic; they only memorize patched texts of Koran.

So who wants to teach us about the tolerance, peaceful solution, dialogue, interfaith relations?
Perhaps these religious freaks that has so many times changed the philosophical and ethical landscape of our common human experience – to live and let live? I wouldn’t trust one henna colored hair from their beards...
Who can really stop them? Nobody, except themselves by rebuking this idiotic religious belief system claiming that we are less and they are more and sometimes we deserve to die – sura 8.12: “I will instill terror into the heart of the Infidels, strike off their heads then strike off from them every fingertip.” (Ibn Warraq).

I’ve had it. I wanted to share with my creative friends my humorous point of view (my cartoon depicting stoning at the Ground Zero). Instead of laughing, many shed crocodile’s tears, attacking and insulting me.

It is time to rebuke all those who embraced an illusion that once one is quiet, it is a good enough solution.

I am an atheist – a person who doesn’t believe in apparition of any supreme being. I believe faith, religion, rituals, and sermons, images of deities, Heaven and Hell are fabricated inventions. Whether it is a fear of death and finite exit or simply necessity to hold on something, I don’t know.
However, I alone reserve the rights to see it my way; I am not inhibited by any restrictions or artificial contradictions, since there is nothing “out there” but the dark, cold, endless and threatening Universe.
I am also a poet and a cartoonist and I subscribe equal importance to both of these concepts. I don’t restrict myself in my writing why should I do it in my cartooning?

I don’t agree with politically correct points of view. There is no such a thing. It is a foolish attempt to stay away from many hot topics such as for example religion and its ridiculous representatives who are telling us how to live or arrogantly showing us which way to Heaven or Hell and other anti-recreational activities.

If you think that it is I who is foolish – you have the right to do so – but still read any information sources – to find out why is Moslem world in particular so screwed up. Why is very abstract Allah more important then real human life and suffering? Why are idiocy, debility, cruelty, blindness, and hate considered a kind of virtues leading to salvation?
There is no mild, medium, well-done believer, there are only recruits waiting to inflict some damage on the “godless” societies and people. Why is shedding of blood considered “the right of oppressed”? Shall I be stoned, burned, flagged, decapitated (just because in the evolution of our struggle for freedom and right to be wrong, we in the West have finally arrived to mutual agreement of imperfect peaceful coexistence)? I think all this religious demagoguery is bullshit, stinking to high non-existing heaven! Remember only fanatics breed other fanatics.

Who gave these self-righteous, zealous fanatics the right to kill, maim, slaughter, to cut a nose or ears, throw the acid into a female face, kill your own sister ‘cause she “shamed” the family? All this in the name of some kind of benevolent big guy who is most probably shocked by the amount of violence in his name – if he cares to exist.

Someone stupid wants to build a mosque, so called cultural center next to a gravitational center of mass murder (known as Ground Zero), committed by the followers of Islam. I don’t care which one – Sufi, Sunni, Shia and many other variations of a blind faith. Someone insensitive doesn’t want to take into consideration that they are people out there who lost their beloved and friends and who do mind where and what one builds in the vicinity of a huge graveyard. It is more than an emotional issue – it is a meaningful and complex story – still in progress today while young Americans in uniform are continuing to die senselessly for the corrupt, evil gangsters on both sides.

Our recent mayor and president let themselves to be heard that they indeed support this controversial project despite fierce opposition of the majority of New Yorkers. Good for them since they won’t to be re-elected anyway. Good riddance. According to the latest polls, more than 65% of NY-ers oppose this nonsense.
You wanna have a mosque a.k.a cultural center? Sure, go to NJ or Alaska and face Mecca there…

I have equally harsh words for any faith (and their extremists) whether Jewish, Christian, UFO who dare to insult living by insulting fallen.
I exercise no diplomatic niceties or ornamental ambiguous statements nor do I care. The truth shall prevail regardless.

My position is quite clear – as an atheist, writer, and humorist, I do believe in unchained human spirit, progress and not regress, fun and not hypocrisy.

Hitler memorabilia 'attracts young Indians'

Books by and about Hitler are in demand in India
Slowly but steadily, a decade-old business around the dead and universally despised dictator Adolf Hitler is emerging as a small-scale industry in India.
Books and memorabilia on the German leader's life have found a steady market in some sections of Indian society where he is idolised and admired, mostly by the young.
The numbers are small but seem to be growing.
Latest reports say Bollywood is now planning to cash in. A film - Dear Friend Hitler - is due to be released by the end of the year, focusing on the dictator's relationship with his mistress Eva Braun.
It's hard to narrow down what makes the dictator popular in India, but some young people say they are attracted by his "discipline and patriotism".
Most of them are, however, quick to add that they do not approve of his racial prejudices and the Holocaust in which millions of Jews were killed.
But the truth is that books, T-shirts, bags and key-rings with his photo or name on do sell in India. And his autobiography, Mein Kampf, sells the most.
'Bestseller'
Jaico, the largest publisher and distributor of Mein Kampf in India, has sold more than a 100,000 copies in the last 10 years.
Crossword, an India-wide chain of book stores, has sold more than 25,000 copies since 2000 and marketing head Sivaram Balakrishnan says: "It's been a consistent bestseller for us."

And demand seems to be growing. Jaico's chief editor RH Sharma says: "There has been a steady rise of 10% to 15% in the book's sale."
Until two years ago, a typical Mumbai (Bombay) bookstore sold 40-50 copies of Mein Kampf a year. Now the figure is more like several hundred copies annually.
The more well-heeled the area, the higher the sales. For example, the Crossword outlet in Mumbai's affluent Bandra district sells, on average, three copies a day.
The book has several editions and is available in vernacular Indian languages too. Mannyes Booksellers in the western city of Pune keeps at least four editions. There are at least seven publishers now competing with Jaico.
Global sales figures for Mein Kampf are hard to come by, but the book sells well in other parts of the world too.
In the US, it sold 26,000 copies last year 2009. In 2005 it sold 100,000 copies in Turkey in just a few months. The Arabic imprint is popular in the Palestinian territories.
Mein Kampf is published by Random House in the UK but the company would not give sales figures to the BBC.
'Positive and negative'
Nearly all the booksellers and publishers contacted in India say it is mainly young people who read Mein Kampf.

It's not just the autobiography - books on the Nazi leader, T-shirts, bags, bandanas and key-rings are also in demand.
A shop in Pune, called Teens, says it sells nearly 100 T-shirts a month with Hitler's image on them.
Prayag Thakkar, a 19-year-old student in Gujarat state, is one of them: "I have idolised Hitler ever since I have had a sense of history. I admire his leadership qualities and his discipline."
The Holocaust was bad, he says, but that is not his concern. "He mesmerised the whole nation with his leadership and iron discipline. India needs his discipline."
Dimple Kumari, a research associate in Pune, has not read Mein Kampf but she would wear the Hitler T-shirt out of admiration for him. She calls him "a legend" and tries to put her admiration for him in perspective: "The killing of Jews was not good, but everybody has a positive and negative side."

Shilpi Guha says she started reading the book but could not finish it and she wouldn't like to dwell on the dictator's negative side.
In the past, a couple of right-wing Hindu leaders have also expressed their admiration for Hitler.
But young Indians' fascination for him has been explained succinctly by academic Govind Kulkarni: "The youth look for a hero, a patriot, and Hitler was a committed patriot. He is seen as someone who can solve problems. The young people here are faced with a lot of problems."
Mr Kulkarni says he believes the young are gullible and fail to see the sinister side of Hitler.
"Young people have no sense of history. The book is thick and not easy to understand unless you know the history of Germany," he says.
Amit Tripathi, a Mumbai-based scholar, read the book a long time ago but just out of curiosity.
"I didn't find the book inspiring at all. It was interesting to read how he coped with his days of struggle, but his ideology of racial purity smacked of racism."

Pakistani agents 'funding and training Afghan Taliban'
Pakistan's links with the Taliban could go much deeper than thought
Pakistani intelligence gives funding, training and sanctuary to the Afghan Taliban on a scale much larger than previously thought, a report says.

Taliban field commanders interviewed for the report suggested that ISI intelligence agents even attend Taliban supreme council meetings.

Support for the Afghan Taliban was "official ISI policy", the London School of Economics (LSE) authors suggest.

Pakistan's military denied the claims.

A spokesman said the allegations were "rubbish" and part of a malicious campaign against the country's military and security agencies.

The LSE report comes at the end of one of the deadliest weeks for Nato troops in Afghanistan, with more than 30 soldiers killed.

'Double game'
Links between the Taliban and Pakistan's intelligence service have long been suspected, but the report's author - Harvard analyst Matt Waldman - says there is real evidence of extensive co-operation between the two.

"We're also saying this is official policy of that agency, and we're saying that it is very extensive. It is both at an operational level, and at a strategic level, right at the senior leadership of the Taliban movement."

Mr Waldman spoke to nine Taliban field commanders in Afghanistan earlier this year.

Some alleged that ISI agents had even attended meetings of the Taliban's top leadership council, the so-called Quetta shura. They claim that by backing the insurgents Pakistan's security service is trying to undermine Indian influence in Afghanistan.

"These accounts were corroborated by former Taliban ministers, a Western analyst and a senior UN official based in Kabul, who said the Taliban largely depend on funding from the ISI and groups in Gulf countries," the report said.

With US troops due to begin leaving next year, Pakistan and other regional players are increasingly seeking ways to assert their influence in Afghanistan, analysts say.

Pakistan has long been accused of using the Taliban to further its foreign policy interests in the country. The ISI first became involved in funding and training militants in Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion in 1979.

Since 2001, however, it has been a key US ally, receiving billions of dollars in aid in return for helping fight al-Qaeda

"Pakistan appears to be playing a double-game of astonishing magnitude," the report says.

'No proof'
But Islamabad says it is working with its international partners in hunting down the Taliban.

And the Taliban's former ambassador to Pakistan, Abdul Salam Zaeef, says there is no proof of a link between the ISI and the Afghan Taliban.

"I have no proof that Pakistan is supporting the Taliban," he told the BBC, "or that the ISI is providing money to them... or other support to provide weapons."

Even so, Pakistan's role in Afghanistan is viewed as critical.

Last week Afghan intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh resigned, saying he had become an obstacle to plans to talk to the Taliban.

Mr Saleh told Reuters news agency a day after quitting that the ISI was "part of the landscape of destruction" in Afghanistan and accused Pakistan of sheltering Taliban leaders in safe houses.

Pakistan has always denied such claims and points to arrests and military offensives against the militants on its side of the border. Nevertheless, parts of the tribal north-west of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan remain strongholds for the militants.

The BBC's Quentin Sommerville in Kabul says there is a growing understanding that military action alone will not be enough to bring peace in Afghanistan.

"Without a change in Pakistani behaviour it will be difficult if not impossible for international forces and the Afghan government to make progress against the insurgency," the report concludes.

Breastfeeding fatwa causes stir

One of Sunni Islam's most prestigious institutions is to discipline a cleric after he issued a decree allowing women to breastfeed their male colleagues.
Dr Izzat Atiya of Egypt's al-Azhar University said it offered a way around segregation of the sexes at work.

His fatwa stated the act would make the man symbolically related to the woman and preclude any sexual relations.

The president of al-Azhar denounced the fatwa, which Dr Atiya has since retracted, as defamatory to Islam.

According to Islamic tradition, or Hadith, breast-feeding establishes a degree of maternal relation, even if a woman nurses a child who is not biologically hers.

'Family bond'

In his fatwa, Dr Atiya, the head of al-Azhar's Department of Hadith, said such teachings could equally apply to adults.

He said that if a woman fed a male colleague "directly from her breast" at least five times they would establish a family bond and thus be allowed to be alone together at work.

"Breast feeding an adult puts an end to the problem of the private meeting, and does not ban marriage," he ruled.

"A woman at work can take off the veil or reveal her hair in front of someone whom she breastfed."

The legal ruling sparked outrage throughout Egypt and the Arab world.

On Sunday, Dr Atiya retracted it, saying it had been the result of a "bad interpretation of a particular case" during the time of the Prophet Muhammad.

Egypt's minister of religious affairs, Mahmoud Zaqzouq, has called for future fatwas to "be compatible with logic and human nature".

Afghanistan explosion 'kills dozens' in Kandahar

An explosion in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan has killed at least 39 people, Afghan officials say.

Reports said the blast ripped through a wedding party on Wednesday evening, leaving another 70 more wounded.

It is unclear what caused the blast or why the wedding was targeted. No-one has yet said they planted a device.

Last week, Afghanistan held a national peace council and endorsed a plan to seek peace with the Taliban. But violence has continued unabated.

On Monday, Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) lost 10 soldiers on its deadliest day in months.

He said the incident took place at about 2100 local time (1630GMT) and put the number of wounded at 73.

"We don't know how many bodies remain at the site and we don't know if it was a suicide attack or a bomb or something else," he told AFP.

The explosion was reported to have taken place in an area reserved for men.

The groom was one of those wounded in the attack, according to his brother, Mohammad Zanif.

"We don't know what happened. There was an enormous explosion and as a result everyone there was either killed or injured," he told AFP.

Local television appealed to people for blood donations to help those injured.

Although the surrounding district is a base for the Taliban, the families at the wedding were not known to have links with the authorities or security forces, AFP reported.

In earlier violence on Wednesday, four American Nato soldiers were killed when their helicopter was shot down in neighbouring Helmand province.

The Taliban claimed its fighters had shot down the aircraft with a rocket-propelled grenade in Sangin district.

More than 20 Nato soldiers have died this week.

Last week, Afghan tribal leaders endorsed President Hamid Karzai's plan to seek peace with the Taliban.

The "peace jirga" backed an amnesty and job incentives to induce militants to give up arms.

The Taliban have been waging a battle to overthrow the US-backed government and expel the 130,000 foreign troops there.

Kandahar is set to be the next focus of Nato's military drive against the Taliban.

Immigrant youths riot in Sweden, burning down school

Rioters in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, have burned down a school building and thrown stones at police in a second night of disturbances.

The trouble began on Monday after a group of youths in a suburb with a mainly immigrant population were refused entry to a school dance.

Police say up to 100 youths went on the rampage, throwing stones and setting several cars alight.

Two people were detained but later released.

'Little Mogadishu'
Police said the rioters threw stones at the fire engines, preventing them from reaching the school building before it burned to the ground. The youths also attacked a police station.

Rinkeby is home to a large number of first- and second-generation immigrants. Many of them are from Somalia, so the area is sometimes nicknamed Little Mogadishu.

Government ministers have visited Rinkeby to assess the situation.

(CNN) -- Pakistan is blocking access to Facebook in response to an online group calling on people to draw the Prophet Mohammed, officials said Wednesday.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority issued the order a day before "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day," scheduled by a Facebook group with the same name, because of "the objectionable material" on the social networking site, said Khoram Ali Mehran of the telecommunication authority.
"We have blocked it for an indefinite amount of time. We are just following the government's instructions and the ruling of the Lahore High Court. If the government decides to unblock it then that's what we will do," he said.
The organization has not received any complaints from internet users about the blocking of Facebook so far, he said. Devout Muslims consider it offensive to depict Mohammed.
There were riots around the world in response to a series of cartoons of Mohammed in a Danish newspaper in 2005, and at least two European cartoonists live under police protection after publication of their drawings of the Muslim prophet.
Mimi Sulpovar, who started the Facebook group, said she read about the idea on a blog after Comedy Central bleeped out part of an episode of "South Park" that mentioned the prophet.
"This is meant to be in protest," said Sulpovar, who is American. "This is something I have felt strongly about for a long time: Bullying by certain Muslim groups will not be tolerated in a free country."
Sulpovar said Pakistan's decision to block Facebook was ridiculous. Her group and a similar one had attracted about 7,000 fans between them Wednesday. Groups opposing the idea had about 68,000.
A spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations said the idea behind the group was offensive.
"Islam discourages any visual representations of the prophets of God -- Jesus, Moses, Mohammed, anybody -- because we believe it can lead to a form of idol worship," Ibrahim Hooper said. "The majority of Muslims worldwide object to any representation of a prophet of God."
The idea of "Draw Mohammad Day" originated with a cartoonist who has since distanced herself from the idea, Sulpovar and Hooper said.
"The whole campaign has been taken up by Muslim-bashers and Islamophobes," Hooper said.
Sulpovar denied being anti-Muslim.
"This extends beyond being able to draw Mohammad," she said. "If it's offensive to you, that's fine, but I don't feel it's right to impose your belief on others through intimidation.
"This is nothing to do with hate or bigotry," she said. "Nobody is inciting violence or preaching open hatred towards individuals."
Sulpovar said she is not a Muslim but added that she had received "hundreds of e-mails from people trying to explain this to me."
One group member said she saw anger and fear on both sides of the controversy but felt that free speech could not be compromised.
"This is a hot-topic debate, but so is abortion, illegal immigrants, gay marriage and politics. If we allow even a small compromise for one group, then the free speech on topics like abortion, illegal immigrants and politics can also be censored based on accusations that they cause violence or hate," Autumn Meadows said on CNN's iReport.
"Hate speech is wanting a group eradicated, physically harmed or dead. I don't think drawing Mohammed falls under that category," she said.
"Islam is not above criticism or cartoons. I believe in equality, and censoring Mohammed while we can draw every other figure in the world does not equal equality," she said.
Facebook is investigating the block, said Debbie Frost, the company's director of global communications.

'Barbaric' killing of murder suspect by Lebanese mob

Lebanese officials are investigating the lynching by angry villagers of an Egyptian man accused of killing a local couple and their two grandchildren.
The suspect was with police re-enacting the crime when he was seized by a mob in a village south of Beirut, according to Lebanese media reports.
The mob stabbed him to death and then hanged him with a butcher's hook from a pole in the village square.
Officials condemned the action by villagers as "barbaric".
Interior Minister Ziad Baroud ordered an investigation and said such vigilante action was "extremely dangerous".
'Army intervention'
Mohammed Muslem, a 38-year-old Egyptian reportedly working as a butcher in Ketermaya village, had been arrested on suspicion of shooting dead an elderly couple and their granddaughters aged seven and nine.
He is said to have confessed and was leading police officers through the events of the day when dozens of villagers dragged him away from police custody and began beating him with sticks and knives.

Some witnesses said police rescued him and took him to a nearby hospital, only for the crowd to break in to the intensive care unit, drag him out and continue to beat him.
After killing Mohammed Muslem, the mob is reported to have stripped him down to his underpants, driven his body through the streets on a car bonnet, and then hung him from a pole in the centre of the village with onlookers crying "Allahu Akbar" or God is Great.
The army was finally able to intervene after 30 minutes and took his body away.
"Whatever the feeling of the villagers, nothing can justify this type of reaction," Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar said.
"We have the names of at least 10 people who took part in this horrible crime and the courts must now do their work. No state of law can condone what happened."
But villagers were unrepentant. "This man came to this village and he did a big crime..." one villager was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying. "And thank God the village took revenge with our own hands."

It is Saturday night, and the streets of Banda Aceh are packed. Cars and motorcycles jostle for space on the roads, while "Bentor" taxis - motorcycles attached to wheelbarrows - scout for passengers.
Like any big city in Indonesia, Banda Aceh comes to life at the weekends. It is hard to believe that this city was once a devastated wasteland, laid to ruin by the powerful tsunami that destroyed everything in its trail just five years ago.
But it is not just the brand new roads and fancy buildings that are different about this place now. There are also the Sharia police. They were set up in Aceh in 2003 but only started their operations in Banda Aceh after the tsunami.
I went to visit them before some of the officers were due out on their evening patrols.

Nindy says she does not have to wear a headscarf to be a good Muslim
There I met Iskandar, head of the religious taskforce in the Banda Aceh district, who was busy barking out orders to the rest of his team before they went.
"The duty of the Sharia police in Aceh is to keep the regulations of Islamic law, to make the Acehnese care about their religion," he told me as he showed me around their dingy offices.
Beach patrol
The Sharia police see themselves as the guardians of Islam in Aceh.
Decked out in military-style, olive-green uniforms and berets, they cruise the streets in their open-top vehicles, looking for anyone breaking Islamic law.
Their first stop is the beach. It is a popular destination for teenagers in Aceh at night.
A romantic ballad plays on the speakers, while young couples lounge on plastic chairs, in front of makeshift cafes.
Boys in their jeans and some girls in their jilbabs, eating corn on the cob and sipping Coca-Cola.

But the party does not last long. The Sharia police are here - and they zero in on their first target. A young boy and girl, sitting too close to one another in the dark.
What happens next would be almost farcical if it was not so humiliating for those involved. The Sharia police surround the couple, demanding to see their identity cards.
The young girl, wearing a bright yellow jilbab, turns away, too embarrassed to speak.
The boy, clean shaven and handsome, tries to explain that they were doing nothing wrong - just hanging out and talking, but is cut short by one of the men in charge.
They are told to get out of the dark and leave the beachfront. It is late and they should not be out at night - especially since they are unmarried and not related to one another by blood.
"Under our laws, an unmarried man and woman who sit alone together in the dark are immoral," Zaki Almubarak tells me.
"To prevent them from committing adultery, we stop them."
Veranda of Islam
Religious law has penetrated all parts of Aceh's life - even making its presence felt at an ordinary high school basketball game.

Like anywhere else in the country, the youngsters cheer enthusiastically for their teams.
But here in Aceh there is a difference - the boys and girls sit on opposite sides of the court.
They are forced to sit apart by the Sharia police who are patrolling the auditorium looking for any violations of Islamic law.
Nindy, 18, has come to watch the game with her female friends, but, unlike the other girls, she stands out because she does not wear the traditional Muslim headscarf.
She refuses to comply with the Sharia police's rules.
Outside the auditorium, I ask her why she is willing to take this risk in deeply Muslim Aceh.
"I know that people here are pious and they really love their religion. I just never thought it was going to be this fundamentalist," she says, playing with the tassels on her shawl.
"Aceh's changed a lot. It doesn't mean I'm not a good Muslim if I don't wear this - my headscarf. It's my right to live the way I want to."
Aceh is one of the most deeply Muslim places in Indonesia. Often called the veranda of Islam, it is seen as the birth place of the Muslim religion in Indonesia.
But many here are concerned about how quickly their province is changing.

Now a new law has people worried. Only in place in Western Aceh, and effective from January of this year, the law bans women from wearing tight trousers.
Even in Banda Aceh though, at least eight hours away from where the ban applies, Novi has seen the ban affect her business.
She sells tight trousers for a living and sales have slumped by 50% since the ban was put in place.
She tells me she is a devout Muslim - and wears a headscarf - but does not agree that these decisions should be dictated by an external body.
"They can't impose that kind of ban," she tells me.
"What we wear doesn't reflect our morality. It's our right to wear what we want as long as we don't go against our religion."
Stoning laws
Lawmakers who support Sharia law say opinions were sought from Aceh's citizens before it was introduced - and for the most part, people here approved of the law.

Stoning for adulterers and banning tight trousers may sound harsh, but lawmakers say strict laws exist in other parts of the world too.
Burhanuddin is one of those who passed the law on stoning for adulterers in Aceh.
"Sharia law acts as a deterrent in Aceh. We need it," he says.
"China has a death penalty, so does America. They even detain people without trial there. Why do people only point the finger at Aceh?"
But for Nindy and her friends, the answer to that question is fairly obvious.
At the end of the day I meet up with them again, at the beach where just the night before the Sharia police were conducting their raids.
Hanging out at the beach, they are like teenagers anywhere else in the world - laughing, gossiping about boys.
Sharia law is not new to them or to the people of Aceh - it was brought in in 2002 - but it is now being enforced far more strictly than ever before.
People in Aceh are some of the most devoutly Muslim in Indonesia, but many here feel you can be both Muslim and modern as well.

Thieves steal Auschwitz's 'Arbeit macht frei' entrance sign

A gang of thieves in Poland has stolen the infamous wrought iron sign announcing that “work sets you free” that spans the main gate of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

The long, curving sign, reading “Arbeit macht frei”, was erected by the Nazis soon after the old Auschwitz barracks were converted into a labour and extermination centre in 1940. It was supposed to suggest that hard work would eventually allow inmates to walk free.

But, as Auschwitz was turned into a major hub for the Holocaust, murdering over a million people, the majority of them Jews, the sign became a mocking, cynical commentary.

“It seems that a gang of perhaps three people unscrewed the sign between three o’clock and five o’clock on Friday morning,” said the spokesman for the police in southern Poland, Dariusz Nowak. “They must have used a ladder and had a car waiting for them.”

The Jewish community in Poland and the Israel authorities expressed deep shock and dismay.

“This is very saddening,” Jaroslaw Mensfelt, the Auschwitz museum’s spokesman, said. “The thieves either didn’t know where they were or — what’s even worse — they did know but that didn’t prevent them from stealing." Police say that they are investigating all possible options. The obvious explanation seems to be that the theft was carried out by neo-Nazis.

Holocaust deniers have long targeted Auschwitz in an attempt to demonstrate that the systematic murder of Jews has been invented or exaggerated. Deniers have previously taken soil samples from the camp and made measurements in order to argue that the number of victims gassed and cremated was far smaller than claimed.

The camp museum directors have already stated that a replica has been made of the sign. The neo-Nazis could try to establish that the sign is fake and thus, by extension, claim that much of the camp is as well.

“We have already installed a replica sign over the gate,” Mr Mensfelt said. “We used it in the past when the original was being repaired. I hope the original will quickly be retrieved and the thieves caught.

“This is not only a theft, but a horrible profanation in a place where more than a million people were murdered in the biggest such site in this part of the world. It is a disgraceful act.”

There has always been a danger as Holocaust survivors and their Nazi murderers die out that the authenticity of the sites themselves would be questioned.

Auschwitz is made up primarily of red-brick buildings that formed part of Habsburgian barracks — used initially to imprison Polish political prisoners — and the wooden prisoner huts of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Birkenau was the location of the gas chambers, but both parts of the old Nazi camp are showing signs of wear and tear as many hundreds of thousands of tourists visit the site, near Cracow, every year.

The critical question has been how far to restore the buildings and the crumbling personal possessions — the spectacles for example, removed from the corpses of those gassed to death, about 80,000 shoes and 3,800 suitcases — and risk opening up the museum to charges of falsification. In all there are 155 buildings, including crematoria, and about 300 ruins on the sprawling site.

The theft could be linked to the decision this week by Germans authorities to pay half the cost of patching up the buildings. About €60 million have been earmarked by Germany’s 16 federal states and by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s federal Government. The Auschwitz-Birkenau International Memorial Foundation has appealed for a total of €120 million.

Chinese man sets himself on fire in Beijing

A Chinese man is being treated in hospital after setting himself on fire in the capital, Beijing, to protest against the demolition of his home.
The man, named by local media as Xi Xinzhu, set himself alight when a demolition crew arrived to move him out and start tearing down his home.
Analysts say the incident will add to already intense pressure to reform China's rules on forced eviction.
Last month a woman died after setting herself alight in a similar protest.
Growing anger
Xi Xinzhu suffered burns to 10% of his body, officials told the Chinese Communist Party-controlled People's Daily newspaper.
"We tried everything to raise legal questions about this demolition through normal channels, but nobody would do anything, although there are plainly problems," Xi's brother, Xi Xinqiang, told Reuters news agency.
The protest is just one of a series in a country where land is effectively controlled by the state.
The law currently allows local governments to claim land and confiscate homes for urban development projects - a system which critics say is open to abuse.
Residents often complain that the amount of compensation offered is far below the real value of their homes.
Chinese legal experts have called for major changes, and in a sign that the government may be seeking to ease public anger, officials met nine of them on Wednesday to discuss the issue.

Nobel Peace Prize medal 'confiscated' by Iran

A Nobel Peace Prize medal awarded to Iranian human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi has been confiscated, she says.
The 2003 medal and the accompanying diploma were taken from a bank box in Tehran about three weeks ago, she said.
The Norwegian foreign ministry said it was "shocked", describing the confiscation as the first time national authorities had taken such action.
Ms Ebadi has criticised Iran's disputed election earlier this year and the subsequent treatment of protesters.
'Unheard of'
In Norway, where a committee chooses the annual recipient, Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said: "Such an act leaves us feeling shock and disbelief."
The ministry summoned Iran's charge d'affaires to protest about the confiscation.
Iran has not made any official comment on the issue.
The Norwegian ministry was also concerned about the alleged beating of Ms Ebadi's husband in Tehran, with Mr Stoere saying the "persecution of Dr Ebadi and her family shows that freedom of expression is under great pressure in Iran".
The Norwegian Nobel Committee's permanent secretary, Geir Lundestad, said the move was "unheard of" and "unacceptable", Associated Press reported.
The result of June's election, in which President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was re-elected, saw thousands of people protesting for several days, with hundreds arrested.
Ms Ebadi said Iranian authorities had also demanded taxes on the $1.3m she was awarded, but that the prize is exempt under local law, AP said.
She left the country the day before the 12 June election for a conference and has not returned, although she said the "threatening messages" she had received would not deter her.
"I will return whenever it is useful for my country," she said.

Saudi Arabia warns against protests at Hajj

More than 100,000 security personnel are being deployed during the Hajj
The authorities in Saudi Arabia have warned people not to stage protests at the Hajj, as more than 2.5 million Muslims prepare for the pilgrimage.
The interior ministry official in charge of security, Gen Mansour al-Turki, said he did not expect trouble, but stressed that protests were banned.
"We will not allow any actions that might disturb any other pilgrims, or affect their safety," he told AFP.
In 1987, 402 people died when troops broke up a protest by Shia pilgrims.
Iran's President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, warned last month that it would take "appropriate measures" if its citizens faced restrictions.
The Iranian Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, meanwhile said Shia should show they were addressing challenges to their unity.
Saudi officials and clerics responded by warning Tehran not to abuse the Hajj for political purposes.
This year is also the 30th anniversary of the seizure by Sunni extremists of the Great Mosque in Mecca, Islam's holiest shrine.

They have already thwarted several attempted attacks by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which is based in neighbouring Yemen.
The authorities are also hoping to avoid a repeat of the deadly stampedes which have in the past afflicted the Hajj. The last, in 2006, left 364 people dead.
Builders have just completed the rebuilding of the Jamarat Bridge at Mina, where pilgrims hurl stones at three pillars representing the spot where the devil is said to have appeared to Abraham.
Officials say the 950m (3,135ft) long, 80m (260ft) wide five-storey pedestrian walkway, which cost $1.2bn, will prevent overcrowding.

Investment specialist Bill Browder says Russia is "essentially a criminal state"

Russia has now turned into a "criminal state", according to the man who was once its leading foreign investor.
Bill Browder of Hermitage Capital was reacting to the news that his lawyer had died in prison in Russia after being held for a year without charge.
He told the BBC that his lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, had effectively been "held hostage and they killed their hostage."
Through Hermitage Capital Bill Browder campaigned against corruption at some of Russia's largest companies.
Russian officials say they are investigating Mr Magnitsky's death.

Since then, a number of Mr Browder's associates in Russia - as well as lawyers acting for his company - have been detained, beaten or robbed.

'Body sold' to Russia kebab shop

Police in Russia have arrested three homeless men suspected of killing a man, eating part of the body and selling other parts to a kebab shop.
The men were held in the city of Perm, some 1,400km (870 miles) east of Moscow, local investigators said.
Their statement said that the suspects had targeted the 25-year-old victim out of "personal hostility".
It was not clear when the incident occurred. The men - who have not been named - have been charged with murder.
The investigators said on Friday that the body of the man had been found in a forested area near a public transport stop in Perm.
They said the three men attacked their victim with knives and a hammer.
"After carrying out the attack, the corpse was dismembered. Part of it was eaten and part was also sold to a kebab and pie kiosk," their statement said.
It was not immediately clear if any customers had been served.

New warning on 'perfect vaginas'

Labioplasty involves cutting excess tissue that protrudes from the vagina
Women are undergoing surgery to create perfect genitalia amid a "shocking" lack of information on the potential risks of the procedure, a report says.
Research published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology also questions the very notion of aesthetically pleasing genitals.
Operations to improve the appearance of the sex organs for both psychological and physical reasons are on the rise.
But surgeons said the report overplayed the risks of an established procedure.
Researchers from University College London reviewed all the existing studies on cosmetic labial surgery - which generally involves reducing the amount of tissue that protrudes from the lips which cover the vagina. They found there had been little work to document any longer-term side effects.
Labioplasty, as it is known, costs about £3,000 privately and is offered for a variety of reasons: some women complain that wearing tight clothes or riding a bike is uncomfortable, while others say they are embarrassed in front of a sexual partner.

But consultant gynaecologist Sarah Creighton and psychologist Lih-Mei Liao challenged the ethics of offering women surgery to address such insecurities, suggesting it was adverts for a "homogenised, pre-pubescent genital appearance" which created these anxieties in the first place.
They also suggested that any pain apparently caused by protrusion may well have a psychological root - noting that male genitalia protrude far further without causing major discomfort.
Counselling and support could therefore be a preferable alternative to surgery, they argue.
Female circumcision
The number of women undergoing labioplasty nationwide is unknown as the majority of the operations are performed privately, but last year procedures on the NHS increased by 70% on the previous year to 1,118.
In studies dating back to 1950, examined by the researchers, dissatisfaction with the way the vagina looked was the primary reason for surgery, with patients also speaking of low self-esteem and sexual difficulties.

But rather than curing sexual problems, Dr Creighton suggested surgery might exacerbate them by damaging the nerve supply to the area, impairing sexual sensitivity and satisfaction.
She also suggests that women who undergo this procedure might experience similar problems in childbirth as those who have experienced female genital mutilation, in which parts of the vagina are ritualistically removed.
It is now well documented that women who have undergone such circumcision are more likely to experience significant tearing and bleeding after labour and even the death of their babies, problems which are overcome by Caesarean delivery.
"Labial surgery needs to be rigorously evaluated in future, and for longer term," said Dr Creighton.
"Furthermore, quality research is needed to improve our understanding of the psychological drivers behind women's decision to sacrifice sexually sensitive tissue that contributes to erotic experiences, for a certain genital appearance that used to be an obligation only for some glamour models."
'Terrorising' patients
Douglas McGeorge, past president of the the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, rejected the comparison with female circumcision, arguing it was a relatively minor operation with few possible complications.
"They've gone a bit over the top. Essentially this is just about removing a bit of loose flesh, leaving behind an elegant-looking labia with minimum scarring. The procedure won't interfere with sexual function.
"Women want this for a number of reasons - some find it uncomfortable to ride a bike for instance, but for the majority it is aesthetic, that's true.
"Lads' mags are looked at by girlfriends, and make them think more about the way they look. We live in times where we are much more open about our bodies - and changing them - and labioplasty is simply a part of this."
Angelica Kavouni, a cosmetic surgeon who carries out labioplasty, said it was wrong to "terrorise patients" with suggestions of long-term consequences.
"This is a procedure which we have been doing since the 1970s. Any operation performed poorly carries risks, but when it's done properly there are very few issues at all.
"I have seen women who I have sent away because I don't think they have a problem, but for women with serious hypertrophy - when the tissue is dark and hangs down - there is a simple way to deal with it. The feedback I receive is very positive indeed."
BJOG editor Professor Philip Steer said the study "underlines the need for multidisciplinary research to investigate the range of factors that affect women's sexual function and wellbeing.
"Reliable information on the risks and benefits of labial surgery, as well as alternative approaches, is vital to ensuring informed choice for women."

China 'running illegal prisons'

Former inmates claim they were beaten and raped in the jails
China is running a number of unlawful detention centres in which its citizens can be kept for months, according to Human Rights Watch.
It says these centres - known as black jails - are often in state-run hotels, nursing homes or psychiatric hospitals.
Among those detained are ordinary people who have travelled to Beijing to report local injustices.
China says it is a country ruled by laws, but there are other sources to suggest that black jails do exist.
'Punched and kicked'
The human rights group report, entitled An Alleyway in Hell, says ordinary people are often abducted off the streets and taken to illegal detention centres.
They are sometimes stripped of their possessions, beaten and given no information about why they have been detained.

Legal detention centres have also come in for criticism
Human Rights Watch said it collected information for the report by interviewing 38 detainees earlier this year.
"I asked why they were detaining me, and as a group [the guards] came in and punched and kicked me and said they wanted to kill me," one former detainee told the group.
"I loudly cried for help and they stopped, but from then on, I didn't dare [risk another beating]."
Many of those held are petitioners, people who travel to Beijing to present their complaints to the State Bureau for Letters and Calls.
This national government department is supposed to help ordinary people across the country redress their grievances.
But some petitioners are detained by plainclothes security officers when they arrive in Beijing.
"The existence of black jails in the heart of Beijing makes a mockery of the Chinese government's rhetoric on improving human rights and respecting the rule of law," said Sophie Richardson, Asia advocacy director at Human Rights Watch.
Outcry over deaths
China regular denies such claims, but even state-run media outlets have reported the existence of black jails.
The China Daily last week carried a report about the trial of a black jail guard accused of raping a 20-year-old woman who had been detained.
Black jails are just one aspect of China's detention system that have come in for criticism over recent months.
There has been a public outcry over the numbers of deaths in prisons and detention centres, a situation the government has promised to stamp out.

Police in the southern Philippines say the severed head of kidnapped schoolteacher has been found in a bag at a petrol station.
Gabriel Canizares was abducted by Aby Sayyaf militants three weeks ago - his body is still missing.
He was travelling with colleagues on the island of Jolo when he was seized.
The militants had demanded a ransom equivalent to $42,000 (£25,000) for Mr Canizares, which his family refused to pay.

Pre-marital sex carries a strong social stigma in many Arab societies
A leading Egyptian scholar has demanded that people caught importing a female virginity-faking device into the country should face the death penalty.
Abdul Mouti Bayoumi said supplying the item was akin to spreading vice in society, a crime punishable by death in Islamic Sharia law.
The device is said to release liquid imitating blood, allowing a female to feign virginity on her wedding night.
There is a stigma about pre-marital sex in some conservative Arab societies.
The contraption is seen as a cheap and simple alternative to hymen repair surgery, which is carried out in secret by some clinics in the Middle East.
It is produced in China and has already become available in other parts of the Arab world.
The device is reported to be on sale in Syria for $15.
Professor Bayoumi, a scholar at the prestigious al-Azhar University, said it undermined the moral deterrent of fornication, which he described as a crime and one of the cardinal sins in Islam.
Members of parliament in Egypt have also called for banning import of the item.

Russian car crash spate kills 100

A spate of serious car crashes across Russia has killed more than 100 people in one week - leading the government to blame "systemic" road problems.
Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliev blamed criminal negligence and a road culture lacking basic driving skills.
He admitted Russian roads are bad, infrastructure is weak and drivers often chat on their mobile phones at high speed or drive while drunk.
Over 10,000 people died on Russian roads in 2009 - Europe's highest toll.
In the last week a drunk driver in Perm hit a pregnant woman and child in a car-park, killing them both.
In Novosibirsk, central Russia, a passenger bus overturned, killing eight and injuring 30.
Day of mourning
Police are investigating reports that the driver was either asleep or on his mobile phone.
Meanwhile a day of mourning was declared in Rostov after a bus hit a tanker killing 21 people.
The Russian government has made earnest attempts to combat bad driving - including employing legions of traffic police with stop and search powers.
But Mr Nurgaliev admitted most drivers in Russia still think they can break the law and get away with it.

Praying man let his daughter die

A US jury has found a man guilty of killing his sick 11-year-old daughter by praying for her recovery rather than seeking medical care.
The man, Dale Neumann, told a court in the state of Wisconsin he believed God could heal his daughter.
She died of a treatable disease - undiagnosed diabetes - at home in rural Wisconsin in March last year, as people surrounded her and prayed.
Neumann's wife, Leilani Neumann, was convicted earlier this year.
The couple, who were both convicted of second-degree reckless homicide, face up to 25 years in prison when they are sentenced in October.
A lawyer representing Dale Neumann said he would appeal.
'Faith healing'
During the trial, medical experts told the court that Neumann's daughter could have survived if she had received treatment, including insulin and fluids, before she stopped breathing.
On Thursday Neumann, who is 47 and studied in the past to be a Pentecostal minister, said he thought God would heal his daughter.
"If I go to the doctor, I am putting the doctor before God," he said. "I am not believing what he said he would do."
He also said he thought his daughter had had flu or a fever, and that he had not realised how ill she was.
Neumann's lawyer said he had been convinced that his "faith healing" was working, and that he had committed no crime.
The prosecution argued that Neumann had minimised his daughter's illness and that he had allowed her to die as a selfish act of faith.
They said the girl should have been taken to hospital because she was unable to walk, talk, eat or drink.
Instead, an ambulance was only called once the girl had stopped breathing.

Pakistan Christians die in unrest

Six Christians have been killed in religious unrest in Pakistan's central Punjab, after days of tension sparked by the rumoured desecration of a Koran.
The four women, a man and a child died as Muslim militants set fire to Christian houses in the town of Gojra, officials said.
TV footage showed burning houses and streets strewn with debris as people fired at each other from rooftops.
Officials said the rumours which led to the unrest were false.

Minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying that a Christian neighbourhood had been attacked by a mob "misled by Muslim extremists".
Mr Bhatti accused police of negligence, saying he had himself visited Gojra on Friday and asked for protection for the Christians.
Pakistan's small Christian minority has periodically been targeted since Pakistan became a US ally in the so-called War on Terror.
In May 2007, Christians in the north-west of the country sought government protection following threats of bomb attacks if they did not become Muslims.

Cheerleading Leads List of Dangerous Sports for Women

Cheerleading is by far the most dangerous sport for females in high school and collegehigh school cheerleading accounted for over 65 percent of all catastrophic sports injuries in women and girls over the past 25 years, and such injuries more than doubled from 1990 through 2002 while participation grew only 18 percent.

College statistics are equally grim at just over 70 percent of catastrophic sports injuries. A study in the journal Pediatrics says the reason for such a high rate of injury can be tied to the fact that cheerleading has “evolved from a school-spirit activity into an activity demanding high levels of gymnastics skill and athleticism.”

Schools and colleges are becoming more aware of the dangers of cheerleading. In 2002 for example, the University of Nebraska banned cheerleader pyramids and gymnastic stunts following a $2.1 million award to a cheerleader who now has only limited use of her arms and legs after landing on her head while attempting a double back flip. A spokesman for the university said, “In football you have helmets and pads. Cheerleaders do their stunts on hardwood floors or turf. We consider that risk without reason.”

An update in 2008 to the record-keeping system for cheerleading injuries brought everything into focus. According to the most recent annual report of the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, between 1982 and 2007 there were 103 fatal or disabling injuries of female high school athletes, and 67 of those occurred in cheerleading. The next most dangerous sports for females were gymnastics with nine such injuries, and track with seven. The report defines any severe or fatal injury as catastrophic.

Author of the UNC Chapel Hill report Frederick Mueller said, “If these cheerleading activities are not taught by a competent coach and keep increasing in difficulty, catastrophic injuries will continue to be a part of cheerleading.”

Russia 'shot down its own planes'

Russian jets carried out airstrikes against targets in northern Georgia
A report in a Russian military journal claims that half the planes Russia lost in its war with Georgia last year were shot down by friendly fire.

The article, in the Moscow Defence Brief magazine, also claims that Russia lost a total of six military aircraft, two more than it is admitting to.

The report is highly critical of Russian forces during the brief war.

But a senior Russian military official said the information contained in the report was incorrect.

Interfax news agency quoted deputy chief of the General Staff Anatoly Nogovitsyn as saying Russia had already provided full information about losses during the conflict with Georgia and there was nothing to add to this.

"Regarding insinuations that Russian air force planes were shot down by our own air defences, these also bear no relation to the truth," he added.

Russian air force officials have always claimed that four planes were lost during the five-day war last August.

'No co-operation'

The report was written by the respected Moscow-based Centre for Analysis of Strategy and Technology (Cast).

Cast gives detailed information about each of the losses, including times, locations and the names of the pilots.

It is also highly critical of the Russian military.

It says there was a total absence of co-operation between the Russian army and the Russian air force, which led them to conduct completely separate campaigns.

Russian forces easily overwhelmed Georgian troops during the brief war.

But the BBC's Rupert Wingfield-Hayes says losses sustained by the Russian side in just five days have led analysts here to question how Russian troops would fare against a bigger, better-equipped and better-trained enemy.

Afghan 'anti-rape' women attacked

The women were faced with counter-protesting men, who cried "Death to the slaves of the Christians"

Dozens of Afghan women who tried to protest against a new law they say legalises rape within marriage have been attacked in the capital, Kabul.

Police intervened after supporters of the law threw stones at the women and tried to seize their banners.

The law was signed by President Hamid Karzai but is currently being reviewed after criticism from abroad.

Its most controversial article says a woman must make herself available for sex with her husband when he desires.

The law's defenders say it actually protects the rights of women.

'Revisit and overturn'

Thursday's demonstration took place outside a religious centre run by a cleric who helped draft the law which is aimed at Afghanistan's Shia minority.

"We actually see it as a law that is limiting women's rights... We all stand against this law, we want a reform of the law, we want a revisit of it and overturn of it," one of the protesters, Sima Ghani, told the BBC.

The protesters were quickly swamped by hundreds of Afghans, both men and women, in a counter-demonstration.

President Karzai ordered an urgent review of the law - which he says has been misinterpreted by Western journalists - earlier this month.

It has been criticised by US President Barack Obama, the UN and Nato chief Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, who said it went against the values of his troops.

Aides to President Karzai insist that the law in fact provides more protection for women.

The counter-demonstrators - who support the new law - insist that the legislation stops women from being harmed.

"Muslim women have rights which are stated for them in the Koran, not rights that other countries set for them. We want the rights which have been set according to Islam," one of them told the BBC.

Among the law's provisions are that

• wives are obliged to have sexual relations with their husbands at least once every four days

• women cannot leave home without their husband's permission

Critics say the law limits the rights of women from the Shia minority and authorises rape within marriage.

The law covers members of Afghanistan's Shia minority, who make up 10% of the population. A separate family law for the Sunni majority is also being drawn up.

The BBC's Martin Patience in Kabul says that the legislation has some support, particularly among conservative religious clerics who play a prominent role in public life.

Saudi Arabia is ruled with an austere and patriarchal form of Sunni Islam

Saudi Arabia says it plans to start regulating the marriage of young girls, amid controversy over a union between a 60-year-old man and a girl of eight.

A court in Unaiza upheld the marriage on condition the groom does not have sex with her until she reaches puberty.

Justice Minister Muhammad Issa said his ministry wanted to put an end to the "arbitrary" way in which parents and guardians can marry off underage girls.

But he did not suggest the practice would be abolished.

Human-rights groups oppose such marriages, which they say are often motivated by poverty.

Saudi Arabia implements an austere form of Sunni Islam that bans free association between the sexes and gives fathers the right to wed their children to whomever they deem fit.

'Selling daughters'

The Unaiza case was brought by the eight-year-old girl's mother who wanted the marriage to be annulled.

The judge said he had tried to persuade the husband to accept a divorce, but the man refused.

The girl is still with her family and there is no suggestion that she will live with her husband until much older.

The judge said that once she reached puberty, she could ask for a divorce.

Local press reports say the case seems to be an example of how some Saudi families sell their daughters for money.

Correspondents say the girl's father appeared to have sought the dowry from the groom to pay off debts.

Saudi commentators also point out that the marriage took place in the central province of Qaseem - the heartland of Saudi Islamic fundamentalism.

Earlier this year, the country's highest religious authority, the Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz al-Shaikh, said it was not against Islamic law to marry off girls who are 15 and younger.

MOSCOW – Debris from this week's satellite collision could circle Earth for up to 10,000 years, threatening many other satellites in an already-crowded area, Russia's Mission Control chief said Friday.

Vladimir Solovyov said Tuesday's smashup of a derelict Russian military satellite and a working U.S. Iridium commercial satellite occurred some 500 miles (800 kilometers) above Earth — the busiest part of near-Earth space.

"800 kilometers is a very popular orbit which is used by Earth-tracking and communications satellites," Solovyov told reporters. "The clouds of debris pose a serious danger to them."

Solovyov told reporters even tiny fragments could pose a serious threat to spacecraft made of light alloys because both travel at such a high speed.

Most fragments are concentrated near the collision course, but Maj.-Gen. Alexander Yakushin, chief of staff of the Russian military's Space Forces, said some debris was thrown into other orbits, ranging from 300 to 800 miles (500-1,300 kilometers) above Earth.

The U.S. military already tracks 18,000 objects in orbit, but no one has any idea yet exactly how many extra pieces of space junk were generated by the collision or how big they might be. Space experts say the collision created hundreds of fragments, maybe thousands, if tiny pieces are included.

Russian and US satellites collide

Tens of thousands of objects are routinely tracked through space

US and Russian communications satellites have collided in space in the first such reported mishap.

A satellite owned by the US company Iridium hit a defunct Russian satellite at high speed nearly 780km (485 miles) over Siberia on Tuesday, Nasa said.

The risk to the International Space Station and a shuttle launch planned for later this month is said to be low.

The impact produced a massive cloud of debris, and the magnitude of the crash is not expected to be clear for weeks.

The reportedly non-operational Russian satellite, weighing 950kg (2,094lb), had been launched in 1993, while the Iridium satellite weighed 560 kg and was launched in 1997.

When two such objects collide with such force, the ensuing debris can destroy other satellites, says the BBC's Andy Gallacher in Florida.

But Nasa said the risk to the ISS and its three astronauts was low as the station orbits the earth some 435km below the course of the collision.

It is hoped that most of the wreckage from the collision will burn up in the earth's atmosphere, our correspondent says.

Hundreds of pieces of wreckage are now being tracked, reports say, adding to the tens of thousands of objects that are routinely tracked through space.

Some 6,000 satellites have been sent into orbit since 1957.

Suspected militant recruiter Samira Jassim reportedly calls herself "the Mother of Believers".

Detained in January by Iraqi security forces, the mother of six is accused of converting dozens of vulnerable women into suicide attackers.

In an apparent video confession, the middle-aged woman described how she identified potential bombers, helped supply them with explosives and led them to their targets.

She also explained, in a separate interview with the Associated Press, how insurgents used rape as a tool, with the "shamed" women persuaded to redeem themselves through suicide attacks.

Her apparent confession could help throw light on the recent increase in attacks in Iraq involving female bombers.

In 2007, there were eight suicide attacks by women; in 2008 there were 32, the US military says. In early January, a female bomber killed at least 35 Shia pilgrims in a blast near a Baghdad shrine.

Insurgents use female bombers because they can hide explosives under their robes and are less likely to be searched by male guards at security checkpoints.

'Bring her to us'

Samira Jassim worked with Sunni militants from the Ansar al-Sunnah group in Diyala province, one of the last remaining centres of Sunni insurgency, Iraqi security officials said.

She had recruited 80 women to act as bombers, 28 of whom had gone on to launch attacks, a military spokesman told journalists at a news conference in Baghdad.

In a filmed confession, the black-robed Jassim described how she recruited one woman for an attack in the city of Mukdadiyah, 100 km (62 miles) northeast of Baghdad.

"I talked to her a number of times," she said. "I went back to them (the militants) and gave them the details on her. And they told me, bring her to us... And I took her to the police station and that's where she blew herself up."

She also described the long process of persuading a woman named Amal, who had family problems, to launch an attack.

"I talked to her many times, sat with her and she was very depressed," she said.

In a separate interview with AP a week after her 21 January arrest, Jassim also described how insurgents used organised rape as a way of generating more bombers.

Her role was to persuade the traumatised victims that carrying out a suicide attack was their only way out.

That claim was impossible to verify, AP said, and during their interview with her police interrogators sat in an adjoining room.

But in a culture where rape is considered very shameful for the victim, it is not implausible, correspondents say.

A statement said British Bishop Richard Williamson must "unequivocally" distance himself from his statements to serve in the Roman Catholic Church.

The Vatican also said that the Pope had not been aware of the bishop's views when he lifted excommunications on him and three other bishops last month.

Earlier, a senior cardinal acknowledged the Vatican had mishandled the issue.

Ex-KGB spy buys UK paper for £1
Russian ex-KGB agent Alexander Lebedev is to buy the London Evening Standard newspaper for the sum of £1.

The paper's publisher - the Daily Mail & General Trust (DMGT) - said it had agreed to the sale of a majority interest in the paper to Mr Lebedev.

The billionaire businessman is believed to have made an offer for approximately a 76% share of the paper.

He has previously revealed that he used the paper to find out information when he was a young spy based in London.

DMGT said the Evening Standard would pass into the hands of Evening Press, a company formed by Mr Lebedev and his son Evgeny Lebedev and owned by Lebedev Holdings.

DMGT's Associated Newspapers division is to retain a minority share of 24.9% in the new firm, called Evening Standard Ltd.

It is the first time a Russian oligarch has owned a British title, but Mr Lebedev said he strongly supports a free press and would not interfere with the paper editorially.

In an attempt to head off any such fears, DMGT said the Evening Standard would establish a new editorial committee to "safeguard the principle of editorial independence".

Mr Lebedev said: "We are strong supporters of a free and independent press and we greatly admire the Evening Standard as an iconic publication with its pedigree of fine journalism and commentary.

"We are committed to strengthening the newspaper's competitiveness and look forward to working with Associated, which will continue to be involved as a minority shareholder."

'Fully committed'

DMGT chairman Lord Rothermere said the company was "very proud" to have owned the paper.

He said: "It has a long and distinguished history as one of the world's great city newspapers, based on outstanding journalism.

"I believe that Alexander Lebedev shares my commitment to newspapers and will continue to invest in the Evening Standard."

He said none of DMGT's other newspaper publications would be involved in the deal, adding that the company "remains fully committed to journalism and newspaper ownership".

Mr Lebedev has also expressed an interest in buying out other struggling newspapers both in the UK and the United States.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has condemned the Israeli campaign in Gaza, where nearly 600 Palestinians have been killed in ground and air strikes.

In response, the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem said that Israel will continue to protect itself from its enemies, amongst them Hamas and Iran, Israel Radio reported.

The Foreign Ministry added that every country must decide whether it is on the side which is fighting terrorism, or the side supporting it.

Israel launched Operation Cast Lead on December 27 to stop Palestinian terrorists from firing rockets into southern Israel.

Chavez, a frequent critic of the US and its allies, said Venezuela is also trying to supply food and medical aid to Gaza.

Stalin's new status in Russia

The former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin may have killed millions of his own people but this weekend he could be chosen by Russians as their greatest-ever countryman.

Inspired by the British competition 100 Greatest Britons, one of Russia's biggest television stations Rossiya has been conducting a nationwide poll for much of this year.

From an original list of 500 candidates now there are just 12 names left from which viewers can select their all-time hero.

The winner will be announced on Sunday.

More than 3.5 million people have already voted and Stalin - born an ethnic Georgian - has been riding high for many months.

In the summer he held the number one slot but was knocked down several places after the producer of the show appealed to viewers to vote for someone else.

Amongst the others on the list are Ivan the Terrible, Lenin, Catherine the Great and Alexander Pushkin.

Mistakes 'forgiven'

The fact that Stalin has been doing so well comes as no surprise to members of the Communist Party, which remains one of the biggest political parties in the country.

"Stalin made Russia a superpower and was one of the founders of the coalition against Hitler in World War II," says Sergei Malinkovich, leader of the St Petersburg Communist Party.

"In all opinion polls he comes out on top as the most popular figure. Nobody else comes close. So for his service to this country we can forgive his mistakes."

Not only is Mr Malinkovich prepared to forgive Stalin's "mistakes", he also wants the man who is regarded as one of the most bloodthirsty tyrants of the 20th Century to be made a saint.

As I was interviewing him, he held a small neatly framed icon of Stalin's face.

Last month an Orthodox priest also displayed an icon of Stalin in his church near St Petersburg.

Although he was eventually forced to remove it, he vowed he would not be silenced and went on to describe Stalin as his "father".

Many in Russia do still revere Stalin for his role during World War II when the Soviet Union defeated the forces of Nazi Germany.

But now there is a much broader campaign to rehabilitate Stalin and it seems to be coming from the highest levels of government.

Archives seized

The primary evidence comes in the form of a new manual for history teachers in the country's schools, which says Stalin acted "entirely rationally".

"[The initiative] came from the very top," says the editor of the manual, historian Alexander Danilov.

"I believe it was the idea of former president, now prime minister, Vladimir Putin.

"It fits completely with the political course we have had for the last eight years, which is dedicated to the unity of society."

But the campaign goes further than reinterpreting history for schoolchildren. It is also physical.

Earlier this month, riot police raided the St Petersburg office of one of Russia's best-known human rights organisations, Memorial.

Claiming a possible link with an "extremist" article published in a local newspaper, the police took away 12 computer hard-drives containing the entire digital archive of the atrocities committed under Stalin.

Memorial's St Petersburg office specialises in researching the crimes committed by the Soviet regime.

"It's a huge blow to our organisation," says Irina Flige, the office director.

"This was 20 years' work. We'd been making a universally accessible database with hundreds of thousands of names.

"Maybe this was a warning to scare us?"

Irina Flige believes they were targeted because they are now on the wrong side of a new ideological divide.

New nationalism

The new ideology is "Putinism" which, she says, has evolved over the past two years and is based on a strident form of nationalism.

It seems Russians are to be proud of their history, not ashamed, and so those investigating and cataloguing the atrocities of the past are no longer welcome.

"The official line now is that Stalin and the Soviet regime were successful in creating a great country," says Irina Flige.

"And if the terror of Stalin is justified, then the government today can do what it wants to achieve its aims."

The outrage at what has happened to the Memorial archive spreads beyond Russia's borders.

The British historian Orlando Figes worked with Memorial when he was researching his latest book The Whisperers: Private Lives in Stalin's Russia.

"By conservative estimates 25 million people were repressed in the Soviet Union [under Stalin] between 1928 and 1953," he says.

"That means people executed, arrested and sent to prison camps or turned into slave labourers or deported.

"Virtually every family was affected by repression."

"What we have now [in Russia] effectively is the KGB in power," he adds.

"Opposition forces and awkward historians reminding the Russian population of what the KGB did 50 years ago is inconvenient for these people."

So it seems whoever is voted the country's greatest citizen on Sunday, it is Joseph Stalin who is the biggest winner this year as he is rehabilitated in Russia's brave new world.

'I warned Jews to convert or leave'

The suspected murderer of Yemeni Jew Moshe Yaish Nahari told a court on Monday that he had warned Jews to convert to Islam or leave the country and that if they didn't, he would kill them.

The court ordered the suspect, Abdel Aziz Yehia Hamoud al-Abdi, to go for a psychiatric examination to determine if he is competent to stand trial.

The lawyers for the accused had appealed that he was mentally unfit and that he had no understanding of what he had done. They claimed that he had recently also killed his wife.

Judge Abdel Bari Oqba adjourned the trial until a report about al-Abdi's mental health is made.

Al-Abdi allegedly gunned down Nahari, a teacher at the yeshiva in Raydah, on Dec. 11.

Nahari was one of the roughly 400 remaining Jews still living in Yemen, mostly in Raydah, a small town north of the capital San'a.

Yemen was once home to about 50,000 Jews in the early 1950s, but most emigrated to Israel.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - A large cache of weapons seized after a bloody army raid on Islamabad's Red Mosque last year has been stolen from a police station, an Interior Ministry spokesman said on Monday.

Army commandos stormed the mosque complex in July last year to crush a Taliban-style movement after a week-long stand-off with well-armed militants and their supporters who refused to surrender to authorities after violence erupted outside the mosque.

More than 100 people were killed. Troops recovered weapons in the complex including machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, AK-47 rifles, landmines and hand grenades, and showed them off to reporters after the assault.

The weapons were then stored at a nearby police station but had gone missing, said Interior Ministry spokesman, Shahidullah Baig.

"Over the passage of time, the weapons have been stolen. It did not happen in a day," Baig said.

Ten policemen, including the head of the police station where the cache had been stored, had been arrested and an investigation had been launched, he said.

Baig declined to say what kind of weapons had been stolen.

The government said the clerics who ran the mosque, Abdul Aziz and his brother Abdul Rashid, had links with al Qaeda and Taliban militants.

Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al Zawahri, called for revenge after the assault.

Soon after, the number of suicide bomb attacks, particularly on the security forces and police, rose significantly.

Roughly 1 billion years after the first organisms romped in the hay, the origin of sex remains one of biology's greatest mysteries. Scientists can't say exactly why we do it, or what triggered those initial terrestrial flirtations. Before sex, life seemed to manage fine by employing asexual reproduction -- the cloning of offspring without the help of a partner.

Now a new study out of Caltech and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has used digital organisms to simulate life before sex and yielded a possible mechanism for instigating Earth's first courtship.

Intimacy never sounded so stressful.

Comet or asteroid impacts could have stressed asexual organisms enough to send them down the path of sexual reproduction after forcing a flurry of genetic mutations, the study shows. Heavy doses of radiation might also have done the trick.

While these potential catalysts for mutations are highly speculative, researchers Claus Wilke and Chris Adami announced Monday night that they have determined with certainty one possible way that organisms could have managed such a chaotic environment to their advantage in opening the original door to sexual liberation.

The key to this mutation management, Adami told SPACE.com, is the discovery that when things get rough, a population of organisms adapts to handling a few mutations, while also ensuring that many mutations will be self-destructive.

"Mutations can and do still occur," he said, "but they lead to dead organisms and therefore do not affect the future."

Police in southern Afghanistan have arrested 10 men in connection with an acid attack on schoolgirls earlier this month, officials say.

The men are all Taleban insurgents and some have confessed to taking part in the attack, the authorities say.

Several girls received severe burns when acid was thrown in their faces on 12 November in Kandahar city.

The Taleban denied involvement in the attack, which brought condemnation from around the world.

President Hamid Karzai has called for those involved to be arrested and publicly executed.

'Led by the Taleban'

Deputy Interior Minister Gen Mohammad Daud said the men had been arrested in recent days.

"The attack was the work of the Taleban and we have not finalised our investigation," Gen Daud told reporters in Kandahar.

Gen Daud said the men were Afghans who had travelled from Pakistan.

"They were led by the Taleban," he said. "They were taking orders from the other side of the border from those who are leading terrorist attacks in Kandahar."

Kandahar Governor Rahmatullah Raufi said the attackers had been paid up to $2,000 (£1,300) by the Taleban to carry out the attack.

He did not say how many of the men had confessed. The men's names were not disclosed and they were not shown to reporters.

At least 15 schoolgirls and female teachers had acid sprayed at them by two men on a motorcycle near the Mirwais Nika Girls High School in Kandahar.

Officials say the attackers used a toy gun to spray the acid and fled as soon as people came to the assistance of the girls.

Most of the victims suffered severe burns and at least one of them will have to have her face and neck reconstructed by plastic surgery.

Some of the girls were wearing Islamic burkas or veils which provided them with some protection.

The attack shocked ordinary Afghans.

Correspondents say it is likely to have been carried out by those opposed to the education of women.

The former Taleban government, which was ousted in 2001, banned girls from attending school.

A spokesman for the movement denied having anything to do with the attack when it took place two weeks ago.

But the BBC's Sanjoy Majumder in Kabul says many Afghans blame the Taleban for continued arson attacks on girls' schools.

Only two million girls attend school in Afghanistan, with many conservative families still preferring to keep them at home despite a government push to encourage female education, he says.

Hundreds of schools - and students - have been attacked by insurgents in recent years.

Al-Qaeda vows to hurt Obama's US

The second-in-command of Islamic militant network al-Qaeda has called on Muslims to harm "criminal" America.

In a message purportedly from Ayman al-Zawahiri, the al-Qaeda deputy accused US President-elect Barack Obama of betraying his Muslim roots.

He likened him to a "house slave" - who had chosen to align himself with the "enemies" of Islam.

Mr Obama has said stamping out al-Qaeda "once and for all" will be a top priority during his administration.

On Sunday, he said capturing or killing Osama Bin Laden was "critical" to US security.

He has also promised to bolster the US presence in Afghanistan - a policy that would fail, said the al-Qaeda deputy.

The US said the message did not signal any increased threat against America.

Israeli police have had to restore order at one of Christianity's holiest sites after a mass brawl broke out between monks in Jerusalem's Old City.

Fighting erupted between Greek Orthodox and Armenian monks at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the traditional site of Christ's crucifixion.

Two monks from each side were detained as dozens of worshippers traded kicks and punches at the shrine, said police.

An Armenian clergyman said the Greek clergy had tried to place one of their monks inside the Edicule, an ancient structure which is said to encase the tomb of Jesus.

"What is happening here is a violation of status quo. The Greeks have tried so many times to put their monk inside the tomb but they don't have the right to when the Armenians are celebrating the feast," he said.

The Armenians had been preparing to commemorate the 4th Century discovery of the cross believed to have been used to crucify Jesus.

A Greek clergyman said: "We protested peacefully, we stood here in the middle and we claimed that we shall not leave the procession finished unless they leave our guardian be inside. This didn't happen and in that moment the police interfered."

Man's arm trapped in train toilet

TGV toilets are equipped with a powerful suction system

A passenger on a French train had to be rescued by firemen after having his arm sucked down the on-board toilet.

The 26-year-old victim was trapped when he tried to fish out his mobile phone, which had fallen into the toilet bowl, and fell foul of the suction system.

The high-speed TGV train had to stop for two hours while firemen cut through the train's pipework.

The man was carried away by emergency services, with the toilet still attached to his arm.

"He came out on a stretcher, with his hand still jammed in the toilet bowl, which they had to saw clean off," said Benoit Gigou, a witness to the man's plight.

The incident happened on Sunday evening, aboard a train travelling in western France between La Rochelle and Paris.

Somali woman executed by stoning

A woman in Somalia has been stoned to death after an Islamic Sharia law court found her guilty of adultery.

The woman was buried up to her neck and then pelted to death with stones in front of a large crowd in Kismayo.

It was the first such execution in the southern port city since Islamist insurgents captured it from government-allied forces in August.

A local Islamist leader said the woman, Aisho Ibrahim Dhuhulow, had pleaded guilty to committing adultery.

"She was asked several times to review her confession but she stressed that she wanted Sharia law and the deserved punishment to apply," said Sheikh Hayakallah.

A group of men performed the execution in one of the city's main squares in front of thousands of people, AFP news agency said.

Taleban kill many in bus attacks

Taleban fighters have stepped up attacks in Afghanistan this year

Taleban insurgents have killed at least 27 people travelling on buses in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar.

A Taleban spokesman said that all those killed in the attacks on three buses were Afghan government soldiers, but officials said they were civilians.

The attacks happened on Thursday but the bodies have only just been found, dumped over a wide area.

A number of the men were beheaded after the attack in the Maiwand district, local and military sources say.

A Taleban spokesman said its fighters had boarded the buses travelling on the province's main highway, removed men identified as soldiers and shot them.

Afghan officials said all the victims were civilians as soldiers travel in military convoys or by plane.

Kandahar province has seen fierce fighting in recent months.

The Afghan army and international forces are fighting a counter-insurgency campaign against anti-government forces in the south of the country, the BBC's Martin Patience reports from the capital, Kabul.

The casualty figures could not be independently verified.

According to police in Kandahar, the militants failed to stop one bus, after which they opened fire, killing a child aboard the vehicle.

Stopping another bus carrying about 50 people, they killed 24 of those aboard and freed the rest, Kandahar police chief Matiullah Qateh was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.

He added that women and children were aboard the buses involved in the attack.

An Afghan defence ministry spokesman, Gen Mohammad Zahir Azimi, was quoted by The Associated Press as saying a total of 31 people were killed.

Six of the dead were found beheaded in an area away from where the others were shot, the general explained. A village elder also said some of the dead had been decapitated.

Taleban spokesman Yousuf Ahmadi told AFP news agency that those killed were soldiers en route to Helmand province.

"We found government documents on them and we killed 27 of them," he said. "The rest, who were civilians, we freed."

Human rights campaigners have welcomed an announcement by Iran that appears to end the execution of juveniles.

Iran is believed to be the country that executes the largest number of juvenile offenders - defined as those aged under 18 - in the world.

At least six youths have been executed in Iran this year alone.

The development came in the form of a directive announced by Iran's deputy prosecutor general, Hossein Zebhi, broadcast by the state news agency.

He said that judges had been instructed to no longer impose the death penalty on juveniles.

But it is not clear yet precisely what legal force it has or whether a new law must go through parliament.

A lawyer who represents 25 juveniles under threat of execution said he had heard no word yet of the new directive.

Blood money

Some of his clients have been on death row for years, as negotiations continue over whether victims' families will accept blood money - cash to avoid execution.

Iran is one of last remaining countries in the world that imposes the death penalty on juveniles aged under 18 at the time of the crime.

Human Rights campaigners say the practice is explicitly banned by the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Iran has signed and ratified.

In a statement, London-based human rights group Amnesty International said it welcomed the announcement.

Russian rights lawyer 'poisoned'

French police have opened an inquiry into allegations that a prominent Russian human rights lawyer may have been poisoned in Strasbourg on Monday.

Karina Moskalenko, who represents some of the Kremlin's best known critics, fell ill after finding a substance similar to mercury inside her car.

She and members of her family were later treated for nausea and headaches.

Prosecutors said there had not been enough of the substance to endanger life, but that more tests were needed.

Ms Moskalenko's clients include the jailed former Russian oil tycoon, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, and the family of the murdered journalist, Anna Politkovskaya.

The lawyer said on Tuesday that her illness had meant she was unable to travel to Moscow on Wednesday for a preliminary hearing at the trial of three men charged with Ms Politkovskaya's murder.

Lehman Bros head took home $300m

Richard Fuld: "I don't expect you to feel sorry for me"

The head of failed US investment bank Lehman Brothers has told Congress that he took home about $300m in pay and bonuses over the past eight years.

Richard Fuld, whose firm went bankrupt last month, made the statement during testimony before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

The panel is holding its first hearing into the cause of the financial crisis.

It is being held amid renewed market turmoil, with shares plummeting further in Europe and the US.

Committee chairman Henry Waxman opened the hearing by saying the credit freeze threatened the entire economy.

"To restore our economy to health, two steps are necessary," he said. "First, we must identify what went wrong. Then we must enact real reform of our financial markets."

'Feeling horrible'

Turning to Mr Fuld, Mr Waxman asked whether it was true he had received $480m (£276.2m) in pay and bonuses since 2000 - and whether this figure was fair.

Mr Fuld replied that the correct total was about $300m (£172.6m).

"We had a compensation committee that spent a tremendous amount of time making sure that the interests of the executives and the employees were aligned with shareholders," he said.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has announced that he wants to develop a nuclear programme with the aid of his country's ally, Russia.

Mr Chavez emphasised that he wanted nuclear power only for peaceful ends, citing energy and medical purposes.

But the announcement, on top of large weapons purchases, is likely to feed growing concern about the increasing Venezuelan military power.

Venezuela has spent $4bn on Russian arms and plans to buy more from China.

The controversial Venezuelan leader's statement that he wanted nuclear capability only for energy and medical purposes may not reassure his neighbours like Colombia, or even the United States.

Mr Chavez has made his dislike of the Bush administration well known.

He has cultivated ties with nations, like Iran, which are not known for their friendly feelings towards Washington.

Mr Chavez has publicly called for the Colombian rebels to lay down their arms.

However, intelligence reports suggest that Colombia's two main rebel groups - including the Farc - continue to have bases on the Venezuelan side of the border and more with relative impunity, sources within Colombia's defence ministry told me.

It appeared to be a message sent from Hell. The massive blast was heard 15 kilometres away.

Eyewitnesses have told the BBC that a vehicle crashed through the security barriers in front of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad.

The 290-room building was the scene of total carnage as the blast ripped into its facade, destroying everything in its path.

The Marriott is just a half kilometre from Pakistan's national parliament and the residence of the prime minister.

Security sources believe these were the preferred targets, but the bomber (or bombers) was deterred by a huge security presence around those buildings.

It is being dubbed the new "bullet-proof bra", a new kind of Wonderbra which could help protect thousands of women police officers here in Germany.
It may sound like a joke, but this is a serious matter - the policewoman who came up with the idea said normal bras can be dangerous when worn in combination with a bullet-proof vest.
"The impact of a bullet can push the metal and plastic bits of the bra into an officer's body, causing serious injury," said Carmen Kibat, an adviser on equal opportunities for the Hamburg-based Bundespolizei - Germany's federal police force.
"I always thought normal bras posed a safety risk and I wanted to change that," she said.
"These new bras are very important and they will help all our women officers."
